SUP Race Training Program w/April Zilg


Mantra Fit has teamed with standup paddle powerhouse racer April Zilg to design and deliver a comprehensive four month training program that will build your technique, endurance and speed to get you race ready for the Bay Bridge Paddle on June 2nd, 2018. Training programs available for the short (3.5 mile) or long (9 mile) course.

Your training package includes: 

  • Four month progressive land/water training program with daily workouts (rest day is Thurs) designed and delivered by April Zilg in the web and app version of the Training Peaks platform

  • WED evening Open Gym at Nabbs with Mantra Fit Owner & SUP Racer Carleen Birnes, who will coach form and technique as athletes follow April's Wed workout. Open Gym also helps our community stay connected and on purpose! In March, we'll move to the water. Then race league returns Wed nights in May!

  • Weekly check ins via April’s private FB coaching group

  • Access to Nabbs Creek fitness studio when class isn’t in session to independently perform your gym workout. (I’ll be there 6:30-7:30 pm on Wed)

  • Paddleboard launch access 24/7 for the duration of the program

  • Race Day Planning

  • Nutrition Strategies

  • Mental Training

Join us Wed evenings this spring and summer on the calm waters of Nabbs Creek to paddle a 1.5 or 3 mile buoy course at race pace. 

You will paddle the same course every week, improving your time and striving for a personal best over the week before.

The focus of our race league is about advancing your paddling skills, technique and efficiency to build your confidence to race locally or simply offer a fun fitness program over the summer. Beginner paddlers are encouraged to join!

After each race night, we'll meet back on land and enjoy a beverage with your paddling family.

Adventure awaits on Nabbs Creek

Land and sea fitness fun All summer long

Calling all SUP Ninjas! Your training starts this summer at Nabbs Creek. Your kiddos will experience an action packed week with our SUP and fitness certified instructors. They'll learn stand up paddle technique, paddling the calm waters of Nabbs Creek, while playing water lacrosse and navigating through our water obstacle course. They'll help clean our river banks with trash bingo and learn about wildlife with scavenger hunt games. They'll master pivot turns in relay races. And that's just the water fun! Back on land, campers will improve strength, balance and flexibility on our monkey bar course, climbing wall, surfset boards and aerial yoga silk hammocks.

Weekly Camp Activities Include: 

  • Stand up paddle technique
  • Water safety and life saving skills
  • SUP obstacle courses and games on the water
  • Climbing course on land in our indoor studio
  • Land and water yoga
  • Surfset training
  • Fresh air, sunshine and FUN

Your child must be a proficient swimmer in order to attend.

Float and flow on the calm waters of Nabbs Creek with the setting sun sparkling on water.

Danielle will lead you in our last FloYo paddleboard yoga class of the season. Work through flowy sun salutations, standing postures, backbends, and playtime (where you can try any pose you've always wanted to on the board!), before closing out your practice with restorative stretches.

Use this time to connect with your breath and your body as the vinyasa takes you deeper to the core of your being and the playful attitude of being on the water reminds you that all is well and you are, as you have always been, perfectly imperfect.

After class, keep sparkling with your floating yogis friends with a Prosecco toast to the end of another wonderful season on the water.

What is floyo? 

FloYo is stand up paddle (SUP) yoga. Amplify the already amazing benefits of yoga by using your core muscles to balance on your SUP. Our classes include a diverse range of poses, as well as challenging and gentle sequences. Connect to your breath and nature by floating on water under the open sky. FloYo is an incredible experience.

Take your fitness to the water. The very act of stand up paddling is a potent combination of strength, core power, balance and endurance. Your fitness will improve the very first time you step on a board in our Level 1  class.

From there, we can advance your technique and help you turn SUP into a full body exercise in our Level 2 class.

Then we turn up the heat and calorie burn in our PaddleFit classes, Team Trainings and Wed Night Race League.

Throughout the summer, we'll be adding special workshops including Full Moon Paddleboard Yoga, Craft N Cruise Nights and Summer Solstice FloYo. Check back here for updates or like us on Facebook!

Level 1 SUP Lesson - This class is geared for first time and beginner paddlers. We will teach you everything you need to know about stand up paddle. You will finish this class feeling accomplished and empowered to hit the water again and again!

Level 2 SUP Lesson -For paddlers interested in advancing their stand up paddle stroke technique beyond cruising, this class is for you! We will teach you proper paddling mechanics to engage your core, hips and upper body to build your speed and energy efficiency with each stroke.

SUP Interval Training - Designed for intermediate to experienced paddlers interested in advancing their SUP racing performance which includes stroke efficiency, buoy turns, race starts, drafting, endurance and speed. Our SUP launch is located on the far left corner of the marina property by the water. After you park at the marina, walk along the water's edge past the left most pier. You'll see our Mantra Fit signs on our floating dock and building.

Paddleboard Rentals to Go

We will deliver paddleboards to your waterside location for half day and full day rentals. If you'd like instruction along with the paddleboard rentals, please visit our Private Paddle page for more details.

Paddle Prep

1. What should I wear?

Wear anything that can get wet! An athletic bathing suit, board shorts, shorts and tank top. It all works! Paddleboarding is performed barefoot in warmer months. Neoprene booties are a good choice in colder months. 


2. What should I bring?

Bring water, applied sunscreen, a towel and excitement!  We’ll have the correct size board, paddle and PFD waiting for you. 


3. Where do I go?

We run all our paddles out of Nabbs Creek marina, unless we're bringing the SUPshine to you. If you'd like to schedule a private paddle at your location, click here to learn more

4. What’s the minimum age?

Children 12 years or older are welcome to attend our regularly scheduled classes. For families with young children (6-10 years old), we recommend a private family paddle. Click here to learn more about our private paddles. 



Yes! Two showers for each gender are available at our Nabbs Creek location. 


6. Is there anywhere good to eat nearby? 

Yes again! We highly recommend visiting The Broken Oar for great food and refreshments, located waterside at Nabbs Creek Marina at the opposite end of parking lot from our studio and SUP launch.
